A presentation given by WMU professor, Dr. Brian Gogan, on Generative Artificial Intelligence.
Registration Required
This session uses the concept of a writing workflow to discuss ways that humans can deliberately invite generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) platforms into their writing processes. The session will address GenAI prompting as (1) a site for creating new types of composing and (2) a site for aligning GenAI use with human values.
Dr. Brian Gogan is a professor of rhetoric and writing studies in the Department of English at Western Michigan University, where he also directs the first-year writing program.
His research has appeared in College Composition and Communication, the Journal of Business and Technical Communication, the Journal of Writing Analytics, and Rhetoric Review, among others. His first monograph, Jean Baudrillard: The Rhetoric of Symbolic Exchange, was published by Southern Illinois University Press in 2017. Work on two edited collections—one focused on the generative artificial intelligence prompt genre and one focused on autoethnography—is underway.
Gogan teaches courses in professional writing, rhetorical criticism, and college composition. His work in the classroom was recognized with Western Michigan University's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2021.
