Join Amber Adams-Fall, our Maker-In-Residence, as she helps you create something fun and new out of an old pair of denim jeans: a plush whale! Bring in an old pair of jeans or use one we provide.
Registration Required - Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
Registration Instructions: When registering with a child who is 12 or younger, register yourself and then click "Add More People" to register the child as well. This program is not recommended for children younger than 8. Please be prepared to assist your child in this program.
In this workshop you will recycle an old pair of jeans to create a plush denim whale. Attendees will use a pattern to pin and cut out pieces, sew them together by machine, add fiber fill, and then hand stitch an opening closed. We encourage patrons to bring their own pair of jeans for this project, though we will have extras on hand for anyone who is not able to bring their own. If you would like to donate jeans ahead of time, they may be dropped off at the Adult Information Desk by July 25th.
*A note on selecting jeans for this project: The larger the pair of jeans, the more usable fabric you will have, so an adult pair of jeans is preferable to a child size pair. Additionally, stretchy fabrics can be a little harder to work with than non-stretch, which is worth considering when you select your fabric for this project.
Amber Adams-Fall is a Fiber Artist working out of a home studio in Parchment, Michigan. Her primary focus is on three-dimensional embroidery featuring butterflies, moths, flowers and birds found in North American gardens and natural spaces. Sustainability has always been a huge focus for her work. She utilizes as much recycled fabric or materials as possible in her work, along with many different mediums such as hand and machine embroidery, screen and block printing, needle felting, sewing and beading. Amber also teaches sewing and works part time at a small local fabric and sewing machine store.
