In order to improve the ability to obtain critical weather information, the National Weather Service (NWS) established SKYWARN®. SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with over 350,000 trained severe weather spotters. Volunteers help to keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. SKYWARN® storm spotters are the first line of defense against severe weather, and their reports coupled with Doppler radar and improved satellite and other data allows the NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings.
